Malfoy the Terrible

A character who evolves as the books proceed is Draco Malfoy. Draco’s character must deal with many issues as the books become darker and draws closer to an inescapable war. As the series begin Draco is seen as a bully, harassing other Hogwarts students that have come from different backgrounds unlike his own. He clearly has no respect for those students coming from non wizarding families. This is evident in The Chamber of Secrets when he uses the term Mudblood, which is a derogatory term for a Muggle-born wizard or witch. He even shows pleasure when he realizes the chamber has opened and is even rumored to be the heir of Slytherin. In the forth book it is reviled definitively that his father is a Death Eater. He is set up to follow in his father’s footsteps. He is certainly one who likes to talk about his father. Throughout the series you understand how proud Draco is to be part of a pure blood family that idolizes the ideas of Voldemort. Therefore it was safe to assume that when given his chance to become a Death Eater and finally be just like his father, he would be very thrilled. However, just like many characters in the Harry Potter series the character doesn’t always react and feel the way the reader predicts. In The Half-Blood Prince Draco is given the task to kill Dumbledore because of what happened with his father in the previous book. Draco is overwhelmed with emotions of doubt and fear. This is never more evident than the scene where he is seen crying in the bathroom. His character takes on a whole new persona. You begin to realize that this decision to join the Death Eaters is not as straightforward. As the time finally comes to kill Dumbledore, Draco is not the one who commits the murder. He is however present but is unable to perform the curse. Draco’s character truly evolves like many of the characters in the series. Only time will tell what will happen to Draco Malfoy.
